Theory Test

The Theory Test is a required element of obtaining a FULL Driving License. The Test itself is split into 2 parts - The Multiple Choice and the Hazard Perception.

Both Parts of the Theory Test must be passed at the same time so that a PASS is obtained.

The current cost of the Theory Test for Learner Car Drivers is £30.00.

What is the Theory Test

Part One - multiple choice

The multiple choice part is delivered using a touch screen computer and mouse. Before the test starts you will be given instructions on how the test works.

You can also choose to go through a practice session of the multiple choice questions to get used to the layout of the test. At the end of the practice session the real test will begin.

A question and several answer options will appear onscreen and you have to select the correct answer to the question by touching the screen or using the mouse. Some questions may require more than one answer.

You will be asked 35 questions in 40 minutes. You can navigate between questions and ‘flag’ questions that you want to come back to later in the test.

The pass mark for the multiple choice part of the theory test is 30 out of 35.

After the multiple choice part you can choose to have a break of up to three minutes before the hazard perception part starts.

Part Two - Hazard Perception

After the break you will then be shown a short tutorial video clip about how the hazard perception part works.

The hazard perception part is also delivered on a computer but you respond by clicking a button on the mouse. You will be presented with a series of 14 video clips which feature every day road scenes. In each clip there will be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards.

To achieve a high score you will need to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development.  The maximum you can score on each hazard is five.

You will not be able to review your answers to the hazard perception test; as on the road, you will only have one chance to respond to the developing hazard.

The pass mark for the car and motorcycle hazard perception part of the theory test is 44 out of 75.

Preparing for your Theory Test

Although you have to pass your theory test before you can take your practical test, it's recommended that you start studying for your theory test, but don't actually take it until you have some practical experience of driving.

To prepare for the Theory Test it is advised that you study from good reference books such as the LDC Theory Test Highway Code Workbook, which presents the multiple choice questions in the same order as they are found in the Highway Code book itself. This book contains ALL the OFFICIAL DSA QUESTIONS and groups the questions into 12 quizzes to provide a properly structured learning programme. This book also explains how the DSA Hazard perception questions work and how they are scored, with illustrations of the scoring phases of the hazard perception which are designed to show you what to expect.

The Driving Test 3-in-1 PC CD-ROM is another product designed to help you, the Learner Driver, to gain the best chance in order to PASS the Theory Test. This product is used interactivley on your home computer and contains 3 CD-ROM's, the first of which is the the Multiple Choice CD which contains the Entire DSA Driving Test Theory Question Bank. The disk also contains actual Theory Test simulations to give the feeling of actually sitting the test itself. Disk two contains the HAZARD PERCEPTION clips with 100 Hazard Perception Simulation clips (including 10 Official DSA sample clips), which are organised into six carefully balanced pre-set tests or any number of random tests. Disk three is a new addition, the Driving Test extra CD-ROM, which is the ultimate guide to the driving test. It includes interactive tutorials, what the examiner is looking for, fault finder, fault correction and a full Driving Test video game.

If you are interested in either the LDC Theory Test Highway Code Workbook or the Driving Test 3-in-1 PC CD-ROM then they are £5.00 and £10.00 respectively, wich represents great value for money compared to other products on the market.
